Belize City Mayor has COVID-19

Posted: Friday, July 30, 2021. 7:51 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Mayor of Belize City Bernard Wagner is at home isolated after testing positive for COVID-19 this week.

He told Channel 5 News that after returning from vacation, he woke up with a nagging cough and decided to go get tested on Tuesday, which returned positive. Curiously, he had tested negative on his return from vacation, which he suggests means he got the virus here, perhaps while out on City business.

Wagner and other members of staff of the Belize City Council had all gotten their first vaccine doses and his interaction with Council members and staff was minimal.

The Mayor’s symptoms are mild and while he recuperates, deputy Mayor Allan Pollard, the City Administrator, and others will run the City’s affairs.

The Old Capital is in the midst of a spike of cases, with 21 reported yesterday alone.
