By Aaron Humes: Compared to smaller communities such as the four villages in Toledo now on lockdown and previously Orange Walk Town, San Pedro, and San Ignacio among others, the Southside of Belize City would be a nightmare to police for COVID-19.
And that is part of the reason the Ministry of Health is monitoring but not moving immediately to address the situation there.
The Old Capital has seen a rise in cases in recent days, which Minister of Health Michel Chebat confirmed are based primarily in Southside, but he said we are not at a crisis point yet.
Portions of Southside were placed in a localized state of emergency for much of 2020 due to unrelated issues of crime as it remains the murder capital of Belize. And of course, the entire country spent the first two weeks of April 2020, in lockdown in the first wave of COVID-19. Among prominent Belizeans struck with the virus is Belize City’s mayor, Bernard Wagner.
