UCLA football coach scouting concludes at FFB Headquarters on Saturday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The football head coach at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Dr. Ryan Jorden, concluded his scouting of Belize’s youth national team programs on Saturday.

Coach Jorden saw over 100 players called to training sessions from Thursday to Saturday at the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) Headquarters in Belmopan.

“I was invited by the Football Federation to come and look at the youth national team programs and have an opportunity to interact with the coaching staffs and observe the players in training during this initial training camp,” said coach Jorden in conversation with to FFB’s Communications and Marketing Director Yashmin Juan.

The FFB’s idea is that UCLA takes in a number of the Belize players to give them the opportunity to develop both sportingly and academically.

“The FFB has continuously been working to provide opportunities to our football players with the goal of having our players further their education abroad by attaining scholarships,” said FFB in a press release on Tuesday.

“Anytime we’re doing recruiting certainly we’re looking at players to try to find out, you know, what the total evaluation and quality of the individuals would be,” Jorden said.

“We’re looking for individual athletic qualities. Certainly, players abilities to have good tactical insight and then, you know, clearly players that have good technical quality to execute the decision making in the game.”

“Whether it’s an event in Southern California or it’s somewhere overseas, obviously we’re looking to see if we can see the combination of those qualities in players so that we can make evaluations of what their potential is, what their current standing is, and where that could potentially take them,” Jorden

During his three-day visit, Jorden was able to see players from the Women’s U17 and U20 and the Men’s U18, U20 and U23 national teams. If he thinks any of the players would fit into the UCLA mold, we’ll find out in the coming days.
