Police say the shooter on Kraal Road engaged them first

By Aaron Humes: A youth believed to be a killer engaged Police in a deadly shootout this morning, with fatal consequences, according to a police report.

Shemar Nicholas is believed to have accosted and shot 24-year-old Matthew Gutierrez at the corner of Kraal Road and Haynes Street this morning just before 9, police say.

He then rode on a bicycle toward Rivero where he ran into a vehicular checkpoint manned by police, who say he opened fire on them.

Police say he kept shooting and they fired back as the chase continued into Waight Street, where he finally fell and dropped his 9mm pistol.

Both Nicholas and Gutierrez succumbed to their injuries at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Police investigations continue.
