By Aaron Humes: A bronze medal for Belizean-American Simone Biles today in balance beam gymnastics at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, is being cheered in both countries.
This adds to the 25-year-old’s team silver medal in all-around competition, earned before a mental lapse that affecred her concentration in training forced her withdrawal from multiple events.
The U.S. Embassy here said on social media, “We couldn’t be more proud of Simone Biles! Not only did she steal our hearts again this year, but she snagged bronze for #teamUSA in the balance beam final at the Tokyo Olympics today. Simone remains one of the most accomplished gymnasts in history!”
The two medals at this year’s Olympics adds to four gold from 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, jewels of a glittering career.
The Embassy also noted, “Outside the arena, at home Simone volunteers at a food distribution center to help hurricane victims and regularly speaks out on social justice issues such as gender inequality, racism, and abuse of female gymnasts.”
And she proudly claims her Belizean heritage much like Marion Jones did at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, before doping violations and a criminal conviction undid her achievements.
