By Aaron Humes: Disaster was averted at one of Belize’s oldest and most valuable buildings after an installation went awry this afternoon.
A welding tank being used during the installation of an air conditioning unit at No. 3 Supreme Court, Treasury Lane, caught fire just before 2 p.m. but was quickly put out.
Nonetheless, police and fire officials were called to the area and noted minor fire damage to the entrance of the courtroom; nothing inside was affected and no one was injured.
While this fire proved, minor the Judiciary of Belize is no stranger to fire. The current main Supreme Court building succeeds one famously burned in a fire, and Paslow Building which burned in 2002 also housed court offices and records were were heavily damaged and in some cases lost.
