Bakers consider raising bread prices despite edict from Bureau of Standards

Posted: Wednesday, August 4, 2021. 9:17 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belizeans could be staring at a price increase for a key staple despite efforts to quiet such speculation.

With a reported increase in the price of wheat internationally, prices are threatened to go up for the standard bakers’ flour by two dollars per hundred-pound sack, with an additional four dollar increase for delivery.

Some explained that currently, they are contemplating an increase in the price of bread unless something can be worked out to keep the price of flour down by the miller to the bakers.

Over the past few months, it has been reported, every ingredient that goes into baking bread has gone up – yeast, butane, to fuel has seen over a 10 percent increase and costs are simply unsustainable.

A loaf of bread retails at a Government controlled price of $1.75 and unless something can be worked, bakers are looking at at least a 25 cent increase.

It remains to be seen whether Government can stave off an increase or risk national wrath.
