Over 70 percent of teachers have been vaccinated, Ministry of Education feels encouraged by turnout

By Benjamin Flowers: Over 70 percent of Belize’s teachers have been vaccinated against COVID-19, according to Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology, Francis Fonseca.

Fonseca, said today that the ministry is encouraged by the number of teachers that have decided to get vaccinated as steady strides are made towards the target of 80 percent of all teachers vaccinated.

“The latest figure we have is we’re up to 72 percent of teachers vaccinated. Very good news. We are moving in the right direction,” Fonseca said.

He noted that the ministry is working in collaboration with the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) in terms of finding out which teachers are vaccinated, and which teachers are planning to get vaccinated. Fonseca says that the Ministry recently concluded a survey in collaboration with the BNTU, which also yielded positive results for the national vaccination campaign.

“Of the teachers who are not vaccinated, I think over 60 percent of them say they plan to be vaccinated. So by the time the end of August rolls around, I think we will be at 80 percent of our teachers vaccinated.”

Fonseca went on to say that the ministry will develop a special program to target those teachers who are vaccine-hesitant, providing them with information that will make them more comfortable in taking the vaccine.
