By Aaron Humes: United Democratic Party leader Patrick Faber has said the political caretakers endorsed in upcoming constituency conventions should not expect to become standard-bearers for the party – in fact, not even to be approved for caretakers.
The party has five elected representatives and one official caretaker – former area representative for Belize Rural South, Manuel Heredia Jr.
The others will be selected in constituency conventions which will also elect executive members and delegates to the National Convention.
Faber insists these conventions will be held according to the Party Constitution. That is because they ought to be, he says, not because he says so.
In 2019, during the waning days of the leadership of former Prime Minister Dean Barrow, procedures for constituency conventions were ignored, and the party’s procedures carry a taint of illegality as a result – even the recent recall convention he survived.
Nonetheless, caretakers of a constituency are the first step toward potential standard bearers and in some cases a chance to get fresh blood.
But talk of who will hold posts at this point is premature, said Faber, as the party nomination Committee will review and vet applications for posts as needed.
The Belmopan tilt between John Saldivar and Khalid Belisle may be on hold as this is done as well as logistics are sorted out due to COVID-19.
