By Benjamin Flowers: Today, Minister of Youth, Sports & E-governance Kevin Bernard sent special greetings and congratulations to Belizeans athletes both at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, and those competing in the region.
Bernard noted that he and his ministry are keeping up to date with the results of the Olympics as they cannot view the events live and gave special recognition to Sean Gill, Amado Cruz, and Samantha Dirks, who all represented Belize with valor in their respective events.
“We know that they went out there to represent Belize with their heart and soul and of course our Belize populace was there rooting for them and wishing them all the best,” Bernard said.
Bernard went on to say that their performance underscores the fact that Belize has talented athletes that need increased support to be able to compete at the international level.
“I want to encourage all our partners, all stakeholders, the business sector, to see how we can assist our athletes,” Bernard added. “We need to do much more. A limited budget will not allow us to do what we really want to do, but I must congratulate them.”
The 2020 Olympics are set to conclude on Sunday, August 8.
Bernard also noted that Belizean athletes recently returned from competing in Central American games, bringing home Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals, and extended his congratulations to them.
