By BBN Staff: The estate of Miguel Ayala, who was killed in a road traffic accident between miles 32 and 33 on the George Price Highway by a British soldier, was awarded over $500,000 in compensation today in a successful civil claim against the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom.
More than three years after Ayala died in the head-on collision with a British Army Training and Support Unit Belize (BATSUB) vehicle being driven by Corporal Coner Dayne Edney, the family was awarded over $542,000 inclusive of court costs.
Ayala was transporting pigs for sale on May 7, 2018, when the incident occurred. Corporal Edney was immediately returned to the UK as BATSUB enjoys immunity in Belize but was later convicted of causing death by dangerous driving by court-martial in the UK.
Shortly thereafter, the family contacted a Belizean law firm to seek compensation and in January 2020 a civil claim commenced by Ayala’s Estate against CPL Edney and the MOD in the UK for damages. The case played out in UK courts and Ayala’s family was represented locally by Mikhail Arguelles & Associates who instructed their UK counterparts, solicitors, and barristers.
