CARICOM condemns ‘serious’ assault of Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves in St. Vincent

Posted: Friday, August 6, 2021. 10:25 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne, has condemned by himself and for the community Thursday’s violence in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which sent fellow Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves a bloody mess to the hospital.

Browne said Gonsalves’ head injury from a projectile thrown at him by an Opposition protester was “almost fatal” and is being medically assessed.

Such violence, said Browne, is “shameful and deplorable,” even more so because it occurred at Parliament, and those responsible must be swiftly brought to justice. There is no place for such violence in Caribbean democracy, he continued, and all who agree must show solidarity with Dr. Gonsalves and the Vincentian people for his recovery.

The protest concerned changes to the Public Health Act concerning the COVID-19 vaccines.
