Schoolchildren of Albert Division receive schoolbags from Aspire for Greatness and area rep

Posted: Friday, August 6, 2021. 4:52 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Formed in the aftermath of an unsuccessful run for political office, the group Aspire for Greatness seeks to continue to advance the aspirations of its members as well as the community.

Today they donated 50 school bags to child residents of the Albert Division at Bishop Sylvestre Memorial Center, part of a wider donation of 300 school bags with funds raised through various activities.

Organization representative and former mayoral candidate Orson Picart said he was moved to respond from personal experience and civic pride. He explained that he knew from experience what it was like not to have this basic luxury and after his political experience earlier this year, he was impressed with the importance of Belizeans coming together across the political divide and working collectively on addressing issues of importance.

Teacher Alisha Craig of Wesley Lower School, also a former councilor candidate, says she has had students who carried their heavy school books in plastic bags or hand-me-down school bags that wore out before the school year ended. She said that the initiative will hopefully be expanded to include school supplies next year.

Joining in on the initiative was area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton, who rallied businesses in the division to donate another 40 school bags for a total of 90.

25 school bags were handed out this morning separately at the closing ceremony of the Darwin “Puppy” Leslie U-13 basketball camp at Birds Isle. Next week Friday, August 13, according to Picart, 50 bags will be handed out in Queen’s Square, and on Saturday afternoon, August 14, the group heads to the Jane Usher Boulevard area to redeem 100 tickets for bags to residents of that section of Port Loyola. They are looking for an event at which to donate the remaining 50 bags and other ideas for community work.
