US averaging 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 infections a day as Delta Variant continues to spread

By Benjamin Flowers: The United States is seeing an average of over 100,000 new COVID-19 infections a day, according to the regional media outlet Loop.

The latest COVID-19 statistics show that that the number is around 107,143, which is up from the only 11,000 cases on average that were being reported back in June.

The drastic spike in cases is believed to be the result of the more contagious Delta Variant of the virus, which is originally discovered in India earlier this year. The surge in new cases comes despite the fact that more than 70 percent of the adult population in the US has been vaccinated.

In some southern states, ambulances were reportedly lined up for hours as there were no available beds in hospitals to place them. Authorities are concerned that the situation may lead to delayed ambulance response times for other emergencies.

As of today, the US has over 36.5 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 632,987 deaths connected with the virus.
