By BBN Staff: A Belize City woman who did not show up to her trial this morning was found guilty of not wearing a mask, in contravention of the current COVID-19 prevention regulations, and fined $1,000.

Skyler Sanchez, 21, was due before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser this afternoon, but when she did not show up the Chief Magistrate began the trial without her, inviting the prosecution to call its witnesses.

The prosecution called the arresting officer, Police Corporal, Marva Grinage attached to the Hattieville Police Station, who testified that she found Sanchez on the Hattievile/Burrell Boom road in May of 2020, without a mask.

The Chief Magistrate said that she was satisfied with the prosecution’s evidence, found Sanchez guilty, and imposed the fine which needs to be paid by September 30, or Sanchez will have to spend six months in prison.
