By Aaron Humes: Second Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Lester Bird, has died at 83.

Son of National Hero Sir Vere Bird, he was an attorney and sportsman, winning silver at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago in the long jump. He also played cricket for the Leeward Islands regional team.

Bird first entered politics in the 1970s under the tutelage of his father and was twice Prime Minister. He also served as chairman of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Marking his passing, the Opposition United Democratic Party announced on social media this morning, “It is with profound sadness that the United Democratic Party notes the passing of Sir Lester Bird, former Prime Minister of our sister CARICOM nation of Antigua and Barbuda…

UDP Leader Honorable Patrick Faber and the entire United Democratic Party family join the rest of the CARICOM family in extending deepest condolences to the family of Sir Lester Bird and the Government and People of Antigua and Barbuda. R.I.P, Sir Lester.”
