Institute for Social & Cultural Research (ISCR) NICH promotes book on Q’eqchi’ Maya on occasion of International Day of Indigenous Peoples

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On the occasion of International Day of Indigenous Peoples on Monday, August 9, the Institute for Social & Cultural Research (ISCR) NICH is today promoting a book on the Q’eqchi’ Maya written by Dr. James Waldram.

ISCR NICH said they recently received a copy of Dr. James Waldram’s “An Imperative to Cure Principles and Practice of Q’eqchi’ Maya Medicine in Belize” (2020).

ISCR said the book is the product of 15 years of work and collaboration with the Q’eqchi’ Maya healers in Belize.

The description of the book by its printer, the University of New Mexico Press, says Waldram’s work is a ‘groundbreaking study’ in which the author refers to Indigenous therapeutics as ‘medicine’ instead of ‘healing’.

ISCR said that speaking about the audience of the book, Dr. Waldram says “The Q’eqchi practitioners have asked that I produce research that speaks to key non-Q’eqchi people, such as government administrators, biomedical practitioners, and scholars. Their goal is to have their medical knowledge and practice recognized as valuable in both their own country and beyond. They also wish to counteract the destructive influence of the evangelical churches, almost all based in the United States, that aggressively use their power and wealth to turn the Q’eqchi people away from their culture and traditions”.

ISCR said that the institute takes the opportunity “to highlight the importance and value of traditional knowledge, medicine, traditions to the wellbeing of Belize’s Indigenous Peoples and Citizens”.

ISCR said the book is available at local libraries.

Further, ISCR NICH also recommends watching the documentary “Healthy People, Beautiful Life: Maya Healers of Belize.”
