Posted: Monday, August 9, 2021. 9:10 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) today extended financial support to Belize to “foster diplomatic representation and mobilize necessary resources towards a post-pandemic environment and development agenda,” said the Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration in a statement.

The Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the financial support was given under the “Strengthening of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Central American Countries” program which is part of XVII Meeting of the Mixed Commission of Allied Countries of the Isthmus of Central America and Taiwan.

Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Courtenay received the financial support from the Ambassador of Republic of China (Taiwan) Ambassador David Kuan-Chou Chien at a meeting both held on Monday, August 9 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belmopan.

The Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Minister Courtenay thanked Ambassador Chien for Taiwan’s assistance to the institutional strengthening project. Courtenay also “highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to multilaterism and proactive collaborations towards post-pandemic recovery.”

Both the Embassy of Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ambassador Chien “reiterated Taiwan’s continuing commitment to work with the MFA to carry out Belize’s foreign policy efficiently, while further reinforcing the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.”

The Taiwan Embassy further said that both Chien and Courtenay discussed bilateral and multilateral issues to continue strengthening the diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Belize.

The Taiwan Embassy said that Minister Courtenay “reaffirmed his unequivocal commitment to the cordial and close bilateral partnership.”

The Belize Foreign Ministry statement closed noting that Belize and Taiwan have enjoyed cordial diplomatic relations for more than 30 years.
