By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As reported earlier today, the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) says the tropical disturbance near the Lesser Antilles is expected to become a tropical storm by tonight.
Tropical storm watches are now in effect for Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Puerto Rico, including Culebra and Vieques, U.S. Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic on the south coast from Punta Palenque eastward and the entire northern coast to the Dominican Republic/Haiti border.
The NHC said tropical storm conditions could affect the Lesser Antilles by tonight and the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico beginning Tuesday afternoon. Tropical storm conditions could hit the Dominican Republic beginning early Wednesday.
NHC is issuing advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone Six.
At 3 pm Belize time, the disturbance was located over the Atlantic Ocean about 165 miles east-southeast of Dominica and about 205 miles southeast of Guadeloupe.
The NHC said it was moving toward the west-northwest near 15 mph and it is expected to continue moving in the same direction during the next few days.
The NHC warned the Bahamas and Florida of the advancement of the system but said it is too soon to determine a long-range forecast.
At 3 pm, maximum sustained winds were near 35 mph with higher gusts. The system is expected to strengthen gradually during the next 48 hours.
When it becomes a tropical storm, more than likely tonight, it will be named “Fred”.
The next complete NHC advisory will be issued at 9 pm Belize time with an intermediate advisory at 6 pm.
