By Aaron Humes: There has been a furor over the choice of the Ministry of Labour, Local Government and Rural Transformation to equip public servants with SMART unlimited mobile phone service, but Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Valentino Shal wrote on social media over the weekend that it corrects a long-standing injustice.
He explained in his post that previously, only Labour officers got Ministry-issued, limited phone service. In what he described as a “shame” and “embarassing,” Rural Development Officers only got $30 top-up per month to use in the conduct of their jobs, including to buy data. If it finished before the end of the month they had to buy out of pocket. Local government officers got no allowance so they had to pay and wait for “double up.”
After some analysis, Shal said, the SMART package was decided to be best with better features and lower prices. Now, he said, something as simple as running out of credit will no longer be an excuse to not get out and do the Ministry’s business.
Next, Shal said, there are plans to replace obsolete computers at the Ministry’s offices. He concluded, “I will never apologize for improving the quality of service while spending the taxpayer’s money wisely. This is what the people expect.”
