By Aaron Humes: With three murders since mid-July, the area of Kraal Road in Belize City is the latest flashpoint for gang rivalry and criminal activity.

Police have been kept on their toes as prior to the burial of alleged shooter-turned-victim Shemar Nicholas, 16, on Saturday, gunshots were heard in the area between Kraal Road and Caesar Ridge Road on Friday night.

Nicholas was accused of carrying out the brazen daylight murder of 24-year-old Matthew Gutierrez before being shot himself while police say he was attempting to flee the scene and shooting at them.

Officer commanding Crimes Investigation Branch for Eastern Division, Superintendent of Police Alejandro Cowo told reporters, “Police responded to several incidents of shots being fired in the Kraal Road area, and other areas within Caesar Ridge, however, police checked several places, and only – I believe – it is the one at Caesar Ridge where police found, I think, a few expended shells. Up to now, we cannot say directly if Mr. Nicholas’ residence was the target, or anybody inside the house was the target.”

He added that police expect and are “always prepared for” escalation in the area and presence there is highly visible as is the possibility of some form of retaliatory shooting
