Will vaccination be made mandatory in Belize? Cabinet considers!

Posted: Tuesday, August 10, 2021. 6:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: It has only previously been hinted at, but Cabinet is considering a serious push to make COVID-19 vaccination mandatory, it announced today.

Cabinet said it requested that the Attorney General seek medical expertise from the Ministry of Health & Wellness to “explore all necessary legal measures that the government may lawfully implement to help contain the spread of COVID-19, including options to implement mandatory coronavirus vaccinations for both the public and private sectors or to require vaccination passes for the use of public spaces and for business facilities.”

Also, Cabinet asked the Attorney General to explore the increase in penalties for offenses relating to the spread of falsehoods, in particular the spread of disinformation on public health matters.

The debate has been fierce, with opponents citing death and other disability as a result of taking the vaccine and supporters insisting it is the only way to ensure the population, especially the most vulnerable, are protected.
