BREAKING: CWU, Port of Belize before Essential Services Tribunal over stevedores dispute

Posted: Wednesday, August 11, 2021. 10:35 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Christian Worker’s Union (CWU) has announced that despite significant progress in negotiations with Port of Belize Limited, it refuses to withdraw its 21-day notice of industrial action issued on July 13.

The matter is now before the Essential Services Tribunal which will take submissions from both sides and make a decision.

CWU President Evan Mose Hyde explained that previously, negotiations took place while under the notice of industrial action and no one has been able to say what the law is in this regard.

The tribunal is to decide on two of the three issues raised by CWU: the switch in stevedore substitutes and sugar redundancy packages as a result of the switch to Big Creek Port.

More to come.
