GoFundMe started for victims of Caye Caulker fire

Posted: Wednesday, August 11, 2021. 8:59 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Moving fast, a resident of Caye Caulker has started efforts to restore the lives of those affected by fire overnight on Tuesday.

Attorney Wendy Auxillou writes, “I am working alongside a group of fellow villagers (Celina Jimenez, Dionne Greene, Valentin Marin, Joshua Marin) to assist the victims of a terrible tragedy that occurred last night.

Last night at 2:00 a.m. fire destroyed three homes in the Bahia Puesta del Sol subdivision which left four families or a total of 13 persons homeless and penniless.

Six of the victims are children ranging in age from 9 months to 11 years old.

They have lost everything!”

She says that while they are already receiving help with food and other donations, this fundraiser is to help rebuild their homes.

“A home is so important for stability, security, and peace of mind, especially for the families with small children who are scheduled to begin school very shortly. To that end, we are seeking donations to purchase building materials and pay construction costs. Our goal is US$20,000 (BZ$40,000),” Auxillou says.

Thus far the drive has raised US$5,478, about a quarter of the target.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated however the Fire Service has ruled out electrical wiring and a fish coil used by the homeowner.
