By Aaron Humes: The Banana Belt village of Bella Vista, Toledo District, saw a pre-school and high school run by the Government of Belize inaugurated last week.
According to the Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Louis Zabaneh, the schools are conveniently placed to accommodate students who previously had to travel to Independence High School and Georgetown Technical High School, the closest institutions in the area.
The High School has eight classrooms for 280 students; the pre-school has two classrooms.
“It is timely for this investment to occur, they will be able to attend right here in their own community. Beside the facility being beautiful, you will have the overall environment that will be building these students, preparing them, in the case of the High School, to go into the workplace or to go to tertiary education,” said Dr. Zabaneh.
The Government (the project spanned part of the previous administration) spent $4.5 million, including on a road from the Southern Highway to the campus.
Toledo East area representative Mike Espat remarked, “Poverty alleviation – one of the best ways is to educate people, and I believe that that is the direction the Government is taking…the effort they are putting into education in this country, because from the most rural area in this constituency, we have schools…the kids will have a better chance.”
