By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Garifuna Council (NGC) announced in a statement that it has started planning for the 2021 Garifuna Settlement Day celebration in November and has already selected the theme: Au Bun, Amürü Nu Hagabüribei Garinagu; Awanse Wamá Lau: ‘I for You, You for Me’ Is the Garifuna Way; Let Us Move Forward.
“As Garinagu and Belizeans, we must continue to ensure that we protect each other as we battle and adjust to the restrictions brought upon us due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the NGC.
The NGC said for the second year in a row it will “organize virtual activities, continue to work with our partners and communities and ensure that this year’s Calendar of activities focuses on Garifuna identity, spirituality, and perseverance.”
The NGC said that as we approach November and in anticipation of the cultural extravaganza leading up to the re-enactment of the arrival of the Garinagu to the shores of Belize, the NGC branches countrywide will be organizing several virtual activities “to honor the contributions of past and present Garinagu and to showcase the vibrant Garifuna culture, language, music, and dance.”
At the same time, the NGC said it encourages everyone to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols of wearing masks properly, practicing social distancing, and observing other preventative measures “to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our beautiful Belize”.
