By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Medical and Dental Association issued a set of recommendations to the Government of Belize today, on amendments Belize’s physicians feel should be made to the current COVID-19 prevention protocols.

The BMDA’s nine-point list of recommendations comes in response to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in Belize, which the association says is a major concern,

“We believe further measures must be implemented urgently in order to mitigate the spread of the virus,” the BMDA said.

The recommendation includes: amending the curfew so it runs from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily; no indoor dining; closure of all bars and casinos; strict supervision of public transportation to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations; encouraging working from home where possible; increasing the number of COVID-19 testing sites countrywide; no face-to-face learning until students ages 12-17 years are vaccinated; no face-to-face classes for pre or primary schools until the current wave of cases has passed, and ensuring that all frontline workers are vaccinated.

“We have observed that our population has become lax and we are now dealing with the consequences of this,” the association added.

The BMDA calls on all Belizeans to do their part to assist with the national pandemic response, noting that frequent hand washing, mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination are proven effective means of mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
