Body of David Klassen being sought after rescue attempt

By Aaron Humes: The search continues today for the body of David Klassen, believed to have drowned in the Belize River Thursday afternoon after trying to save a girl in distress.

According to farmer Miguel Tzul, Klassen, 28, a farmer of Billy White village, Cayo District came to him informing that a girl was in the river hanging on to a tree branch and in danger of falling in. He went back to assist her followed by Tzul.

Disaster struck when about 3/4 of the way across he went under and failed to resurface. We understand the girl was ultimately rescued.

A search and rescue team from nearby Spanish Lookout searched in vain for Klassen’s body up to Thursday evening. The Coast Guard joins the search today.

Police investigations continue.
