By Aaron Humes: Governor of the Central Bank of Belize Gustavo Manuel Vasquez has stood down effective immediately, the Bank’s Board of Directors confirmed in a statement this evening.
Former Governor Sydney Campbell will act as Governor along with deputies Kareem Michael and Marilyn Gardner-Usher until a replacement is recommended to the Governor General by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance John Briceno.
Such an announcement is expected shortly, the statement says.
The Bank’s leadership team promises to continue to watch over the stability of the financial sector and credit and exchange conditions to produce equitable economic growth.
The Bank has wished Vasquez, who was previously an advisor in the Governor’s office until he succeeded Ambassador Joy Grant in April, the best as he demits office, but provides no explanation for his sudden departure. Best reports suggest there was an irreparable breach in differences among Vasquez and the Board.
