By Aaron Humes: Uncle Medardo Canelo, 46, and nephew Lawrence, 33, were victims of unexpected gun violence Thursday night at their bar establishment in Punta Gorda Town.
But Police currently have more questions than answers in the double slaying which also left a waitress, 18-year-old Aura Pacham, injured. One person, known to police, is being sought.
Lawrence went to open the back door in response to a summons just before ten when according to police, he, Medardo, and Aura were met with a hail of bullets.
Given that the incident took place after curfew, there is a question of enforcement on the part of authorities in town as well as residents, Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood told us at a press briefing, as well as the question of “knock-knock” establishments where people are still buying after closedown.
Police have effectively ruled out robbery as a motive as nothing was taken, which leaves the question of whether the targets knew their attackers and had been targeted as retaliation for previous activity.
Police are also looking into whether the incident could be related to the murder of Town Council worker Dennis Trapp at his workplace in March, which remains unsolved.
