Drowning reported in Placencia

By BBN Staff: A man drowned in Placencia this afternoon.

Police say that 18-year-old Juan Carlos Avendano was a part of a team of six that went to investigate a broken water pipe on the lagoon side of the Placencia Hotel.

As the the team began to traverse the lagoon the water began to get deeper and their supervisor Felipe Sosa, instructed anyone who could not swim to turn back.

Avendano was the only one to turn back but after he had gotten some distance from his team he slipped into the water. He resurfaced, trying to fight for his life, but then submerged again.

His team tried to look for him but could not find him. His body was recovered from the lagoon with the help of some divers in the area.
