School’s back next Monday as online learning continues for now

Posted: Sunday, August 15, 2021. 9:05 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: By recommendation of its sister Ministry of Health and Wellness; the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology has announced that schools will reopen on August 23 at secondary level and August 30 at pre-primary and primary level in full distance learning mode.

Belize is presently experiencing a rise in COVID-19 cases countrywide and so the Ministry of Health is not willing to allow face to face instruction at this time.

“Face-to-face instruction will begin when it is deemed safe to transition into hybrid learning,” says the Ministry of Education, adding that this will be helped by the imminent arrival of the Pfizer vaccine to be used on children 12 to 17 years of age. The hope is that with the already high numbers of teachers, designated frontline workers, bring vaccinated, a majority of students taking the jab will ensure a resumption of in-person learning as soon as possible.

The Ministry of Education also asks schools to work with families to ensure that not paying school fees does not deny a student a chance at Education and to update their Learning Continuity Plans to facilitate distance learning.

After a break since March of 2020, schools reopened in person in April of this year but a rash of COVID-19 cases saw an early end to that experiment.
