By BBN Staff: New Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr Carla Barnett, took office this morning promising to lead the charge to finding solutions to our common regional problems.
She first acknowledged the crisis in Haiti, promising on behalf of the Community to do all it can to support that long-suffering people.
With the same sense of community with which we celebrate regional victories in sport, art and music, she said, we must tackle together our various issues – economic recovery and development, COVID-19, the deterioration of international banking relations, crime and violence, and so on.
She said her office would be open to all in the Community, including the press, to share their fears, concerns, vision and especially solutions for the building of our region.
“I am CARICOM…This must be our mantra as we seek to build a truly integrated, inclusive and resilient Community, that is driven by knowledge, excellence, innovation and productivity; where every citizen is secure with guaranteed human rights and social justice, and contributes to and shares in its economic, social and cultural prosperity; a Community which is unified and competitive in the global arena,” she said, quoting the statement of the five-year plan for the region which she said was still relevant as the Community approaches its 50th anniversary.
She closed promising to serve the interests of the Community “with malice toward none.”
