Alleged murderer remanded to prison until October, attorney argues mental health issues

By BBN Staff: Shane Bradley, 35, who stands accused of the stabbing death of Edward Westby, has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 5.

Bradley, represented by attorney Arthur Saldivar appeared in court this week to answer to a single charge of murder for the stabbing which occurred on Saturday, August 15.

In court, Saldivar asked that Bradley be allowed to go to the hospital to seek medical treatment for injuries he sustained during an altercation before his remand, as he cannot obtain bail given the nature of the offense. Saldivar also requested the that court order a psychiatric evaluation on Bradley, noting that he was recently diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser granted both requests, and Bradley was allowed to receive treatment for his lips and eye before being taken to jail, with the psychiatric evaluation pending.

Bradley is charged with stabbing Westby after being asked to leave a dominoes game, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports are that Bradley was drinking alcohol and began to behave unruly. After being sent away several times, he eventually returned with a knife and stabbed Westby, ultimately killing him.
