Belize Electricity Limited recovers from unplanned power outages

Posted: Tuesday, August 17, 2021. 10:42 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: A hot weekend weatherwise was made more uncomfortable for some by unplanned outages taking place since Saturday, August 14. Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) now says things are back to normal.

On Monday evening there was an unplanned outage lasting from 5:03 p.m. to 6:10 p.m. in the areas of West Landivar, Coral Grove, Buttonwood Bay and areas along the Philip Goldson Highway from Mile 2 to Mile 4½. The company says this was caused by high voltage power lines coming in contact with a low voltage infrastructure below.

Another was scheduled for this morning from 6:00 a.m. to 6:15 a.m. to restore the distribution system to its normal supply configuration according to BEL. It had had to rearrange supply due to the outages over the weekend.

The company says it also continues to “investigate an intermittent fault in another part of the system that we believe may be the root cause of the outage that occurred on Sunday and partly responsible for the outages that occurred on Saturday.”

“The Company maintains an ongoing system maintenance program to minimize opportunities for power outages. In instances where unplanned outages do occur, our objective is to respond diligently in order to minimize the impact and duration of such outages.

We highly appreciate the privilege our customers have given us to serve them and we thank customers for their patience during these unplanned events. We also thank our dedicated staff for their steadfast dedication and diligence in resolving these issues.”
