By Aaron Humes: Tropical Storm Grace is headed our way after striking Haiti earlier this week, but is not expected to directly impact Belize, according to a first advisory issued by the National Meteorological Service of Belize (NMS) and National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO).
NMS and NEMO emphasize that the country is not under any watches or warnings at present.
As of midday this afternoon, Grace was positioned near due east of Corozal Town (18.5 degrees North, 77.5 degrees West) moving north by west at 15 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and a central pressure of 1005 millibars.
Forecasts project the storm continuing to move north and west, and make landfall between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico late Wednesday or early Thursday as a category one hurricane, north of Belize.
Impacts from Grace will be relatively few – higher wind speeds of 10 and 20 knots and increased showers and thunderstorms over the North starting on Wednesday night and continuing through Saturday. A total of 1 to 3 inches of rain is forecast with isolated higher amounts, and there may be flooding in low-lying areas. Gusty winds during showers and thunderstorms are likely and sea conditions will be rough in the area later on Wednesday necessitating a small craft warning.
NMS and NEMO continue to monitor the system for any changes and advise Belizeans to do so as well as, especially at this time of year, storms can be unpredictable.
NEMO’s Emergency Operations Centers in Belize City and northwards will be partially activated on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. to monitor and prepare for full activation and response if necessary.
As we approach the peak of the season, NEMO advises to review your hurricane plans and begin setting up arrangements to move to safety when NEMO gives the order. Stay alert, take action and continue to listen to official information from NMS and NEMO.
