By Benjamin Flowers: The Board of Management of the LGBT advocacy organization Our Circle, says it has granted its managing director Derricia Castillo Salazar a leave of absence after she allegedly stabbed someone over the weekend.
Our Circle issued a statement today, noting that Castillo-Salazar is accused of wounding long-time supporter of Our Circle Shanira Perez, at a Pride Island Getaway event held at Pedro’s Inn in San Pedro Ambergris Caye, on Sunday, August 15. Since the incident, Castillo-Salazar has been granted leave to prepare her defense in the matter.
President of Our Circle said ” Denae Fairweather states: “We are terribly disappointed that such an incident occurred at an initiative spearheaded by Our Circle, especially during PRIDE week. Even more so that it included a long-standing member of the organization and one of our employees.”
She added, ” We do not want this incident to reflect the efforts and progress the organization has made to ensure lived and legal equality for LGBT formed families.”
Our Circle as an organization said that it has reached out to Perez to learn more about the incident, which will assist in guiding future actions. The organization also said that it is taking steps to ensure that a situation never repeats itself by enforcing stricter security measures at all interventions in the future in an effort to maintain its commitment to providing a safe space for all.
Castillo-Salazar received bail in the sum of $2,000 from the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
