Man pleads guilty to cocaine possession to avoid prison remand

Posted: Wednesday, August 18, 2021. 10:19 am CST.

By BBN Staff: A Belize City man changed his plea in court and accepted responsibility for a small amount of crack cocaine, to avoid having to get someone to sign bail for him.

56-year-old, Andrew Simon Rudon, originally pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court this week before Magistrate Audrey Grinage. He explained that he knew nothing of the drugs and was only fixing his bicycle in the area at the time police conducted a search and begged the court to grant him bail.

However, since the court said he needed someone to sign, he changed his plea to guilty as he had no one to sign bail for him.

Rudon was fined $300 plus a $5 cost of court fee, which needs to be paid by October 29, or he will spend a month in jail for default.
