No 7 pm curfew says Prime Minister John Briceño

Posted: Wednesday, August 18, 2021. 12:39 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Government will not implement a 7 pm curfew as recommended by the Belize Medical and Dental Association (BMDA) said Prime Minister John Briceño on Love FM’s Morning Show on Wednesday.

Last week the BMDA got Belizeans riled up when the organization recommended that the COVID-19 curfew should start at 7 pm and not at 9 pm.

“We appreciate that they are making recommendations, but we believe that at this time … the negative aspects to it, is far greater than what we would get by going down to the seven o’clock, the economic toll that it’s going to put on people,” Briceño said.

Briceño added that “What we have done is that now we have mandated now that liquor should not be sold in any stores after six o’clock in the evenings. You can go to the restaurant and get your beer and get a drink, but you can’t go anywhere else to go and buy rum to go and drink.”

The BMDA made nine recommendations to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 virus suggesting a 7pm-5am curfew among other measures like no indoor dining and closure of all bars and public casinos.

Just recently, however, the Government of Belize extended the present curfew until the end of the month as the COVID-19 cases keep rising.
