Tropical Storm Grace expected to become a hurricane as it approaches Yucatan Peninsula north of Belize

Posted: Wednesday, August 18, 2021. 9:22 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Tropical Storm Grace is expected to become a hurricane as it approaches the Yucatan Peninsula, north of Belize.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize (NMSB) said that at 6 am Tropical Storm Grace had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour, was located near latitude 19.1 North, longitude 81.4 West, or about 20 miles SW of Grand, Cayman. Grace was moving to the west-northwest at 16 miles per hour.

The NMSB said at 6 am on Wednesday that “in the extended forecast, a slight increase in moisture is expected over mainly southern areas as TD Grace makes its way just north of the country. As TD Grace moves north of the area and over the Yucatan Peninsula, a further increase in moisture and instability is expected late Thursday into Friday”.

The NHC said in its 3 am advisory that “hurricane conditions and a dangerous storm surge are expected over portions of the hurricane Warning Area in the eastern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico beginning late tonight”.

“Over the next few days, heavy rainfall across the Cayman Islands, as well as portions of the Yucatan Peninsula and Vera Cruz State, should lead to flash and urban flooding. Mudslides will be possible in Jamaica”.

“Tropical storm conditions are expected over the Cayman Islands through this morning. Hurricane conditions are possible over the Cayman Islands later this morning. Tropical storm conditions are expected to spread westward from portions of the southern coast of Cuba in the warning area to, possibly, other portions of the southern coast of Cuba in the watch area today.”
