By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) has upgraded Tropical Storm Grace to Hurricane Grace as it is now packing winds of 75 miles per hour. Grace is expected to make landfall over the Yucatan Peninsula, north of Belize, tonight or early Thursday.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize (NMSB) said that at 9 am Hurricane Grace had maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, was located near latitude 19.4 North, longitude 82.2 West, or about 65 miles west of Grand Cayman. Grace was moving to the west-northwest at 15 miles per hour.

The NHC said in its 9 am advisory that “hurricane conditions and a dangerous storm surge are expected over portions of the Hurricane Warning area in the eastern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico beginning late tonight or early Thursday. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.”

“There is an increased risk of hurricane conditions and dangerous storm surge in portions of eastern mainland Mexico beginning late Friday, and a Hurricane Watch will likely be issued for part of this area later today.”

“Over the next few days, heavy rainfall across the Cayman Islands, as well as portions of the Yucatan Peninsula and Veracruz State, should lead to flash and urban flooding with mudslides possible in the Mexican state of Veracruz.”

In its 3 am advisory when Grace was still a tropical storm, the NHC had said that tropical storm conditions were expected over the Cayman Islands through this morning and that hurricane conditions were also possible over the Cayman Islands later this morning.

Tropical storm conditions were expected to spread to portions of the southern coast of Cuba.
