By Rubén Morales Iglesias: What was supposed to be a good night ended up in a debacle for Verdes at the National Stadium in San José, Costa Rica, in the Scotiabank Concacaf League.
Verdes had travelled with so much hope to Costa Rica, but when Cuban Luis Paradela hit the first goal for Santos in the 12th minute, Verdes became unraveled.
Osvaldo Rodriguez made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 26th minute after Norman Anderson cut down Paradela. One minute later, Brayan López nailed Verdes for the 3-0 Costa Rican lead.
Then, in the 38th, Rodríguez stripped a Verdes player and floated the ball from the center circle over Woodrow West for Santos to go up 4-0 before the rest period.
Verdes never gave up its attacking football looking for a consolation goal and gave up a 5th goal in the 55th when Darrel Myvett tried to clear a cross and deflected the ball into the net.
Verdes finally got their consolation strike in the 89th when Colombian Camilo Fajardo hit a cross from Krisean Lopez for the final 5-1.
With a 6-1 aggregate, Santos qualify more than comfortably to the next round to face Panama’s Plaza Amador.
For Verdes, it’s goodbye for now. Try again next year. But first, Belize must have a league championship that at the moment is non-existent, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
