By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “A classroom is a refuge for many of these kids … we want to open schools by the 4th of October we need to get the children in the classrooms,” said Prime Minister John Briceño on Love FM’s Morning Show on Wednesday.

“We need to get the children in the classrooms,” said the Prime Minister emphatically knocking on the desk as he said so.

And that should be facilitated with 111 thousand Pfizer vaccines Belize received today from the United States. Briceño said Belize expects to get more.

“Pfizer has been approved for kids, teenagers from 12 to 17,” said the PM. “We spoke at length in Cabinet yesterday to ensure that we get these children their vaccinations because we want to open schools by the 4th of October. We need to get the children in the classrooms.

“What we don’t see, and we don’t understand, is the emotional toll that our young children are going through by not having that social interaction with their friends and with their teachers.

“Emotionally, educationally, they are not keeping up, because in many instances their parents are working, or in some instances, it’s a single parent at home, and other times some of them did not even go to high school and would not know how to help them,” said Briceño.

The Prime Minister also made reference to the physical abuse that some children are experiencing while staying at home.

“So, we need to get them out. A classroom is a refuge for many of these kids.”

He made the reference to the Principal and teachers at Maude Williams High School asking the Minister of Education to get the students back into the classroom because they were losing their children.

“The numbers that are going back to school have decreased and so we need to find a way and fight to get these kids in school,” Prime Minister Briceño said.
