By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai is in self-isolation after a member of the Agriculture delegation that traveled to Colima, Mexico, tested positive for COVID-19.
The Belizean delegation to Mexico headed by Jaime Briceño, Belize’s Trade and Investment Ambassador, and consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA), the Sergio Marroquin Coconut Enterprise, Big H Enterprises, and other Private Sector investors returned to Belize on Wednesday after traveling to Colima on Saturday, 14th August. Colima is a state in western Mexico on the central Pacific coast near Jalisco and Michoacán.
The Ministry of Agriculture said on Thursday that on their return one of the members of the delegation tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, all members of the delegation are being tested. So far, no one else has proven positive.
The three persons from the Ministry of Agriculture have proven negative using rapid antigen tests and are now awaiting the results of the PCR tests said the Ministry. In the meantime, out of an abundance of caution, they, including Minister Mai, are on a four-day isolation.
Minister Mai and the delegation were in Colima looking at coconut and soursop plantations at the invitation of the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and exploring marketing opportunities for Belizean investors.
The Ministry of Agriculture also cancelled a visit to a shrimp farm in Independence, which is using new technology to enhance production, that had been planned for today.
