By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department is currently engaged in counter gang operations empowered by the recent declaration of a State of Emergency (SOE); however, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has assured ordinary citizens that they will not be affected.
Williams noted that the SOE was passed to address a feud between rival gangs that has been escalating over the last few weeks and reaching extreme heights last weekend. Williams stressed that, despite the heavy police presence during these operations, law abiding citizens should not be afraid.
“I want to assure the Belizean people, particularly those on southside Belize City that your ordinary way of life will in no way be impeded by the institution of the state of emergency,” Williams said. “As a matter of fact the state of emergency is to keep you safe. We understand that when bullets are flying, these bullets have no name and anyone could be a victim.”
Williams said that the Minister of Home Affairs, the wider Government of Belize and even he as Commissioner of Police did not want to resort to an SOE, but the department has a duty to keep the citizenry safe and an SOE was the best option, having exhausted all other conventional means.
