Police shoot one, hold five in sting operation on Coastal Road

By Aaron Humes: Five persons are in detention in Dangriga after police acted on a tip that a grey Ford Explorer SUV was heading in the direction of Dangriga Town through the Coastal Road with its occupants allegedly carrying firearms and drugs.

The town detachments of Crimes Investigation Branch, Special Branch, Quick Response Team and GI3 set up near Hope Creek and spotted the vehicle matching their description, however, it evaded police and got onto the Hummingbird Highway and then the Southern Highway into Silk Grass village.

When the vehicle finally stopped, one man got out and tried to draw police toward a house. There was a shootout and police captured 23-year-old Mark Waight, who was shot in the upper right leg and his Taurus .38 revolver retrieved. He is stable in hospital and under police guard facing charges.

The vehicle was impounded and will be searched. Four other persons including a female have been held pending further investigation.
