Police Department dismissed 14 officers in 2021

By Aaron Humes: For the first time ever, the Police Department has named and shamed 14 officers drummed out of their ranks for 2021.

All of the officers are constables; there is no indication of the process for officers of higher rank who run afoul of the law.

Eight of the 14 officers were dismissed for being excessively absent from duty; the others were accused of major crimes ranging from manslaughter to sexual offences to drug trafficking. One was let go for appearing intoxicated on or when called for duty.

After two dismissals in January, twelve officers were dismissed or discharged between May 31 and August 17.

By precinct and division, Eastern Division, the Department’s largest, accounts for 8 officers; San Ignacio two, Orange Walk one, Intermediate Southern Formation (ISF/Independence) one and Benque Viejo one, the 14th officer’s place of work was not named.

A number of officers are on interdiction and suspension for various disciplinary and criminal charges.

Police discipline is generally handled by the Professional Standards Branch of the Department.
