U.S. Embassy warns of criminal attacks of women on Ambergris Caye

Posted: Friday, August 20, 2021. 8:32 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: American women tourists on North Ambergris Caye are being warned to watch out for attempts to assault them.

An alert message states, “The U.S. Embassy has become aware of a recent increase in targeted gender-based assaults in the northern area of Ambergris Caye. Specifically, in the past months there have been at least three incidents of women traveling alone, being held against their will and assaulted.”

American citizens and particularly women visiting the island are asked to use caution and to exercise good personal safety and security practices and report criminal incidents to local police and to the Embassy in Belmopan at [email protected].

Generally, tourists are asked to keep a low profile and not draw attention to themselves, not travel in remote areas or alone after dark, stay aware when out walking, visiting the store or ATM and driving, and not physically resist any attempt at robbery.

Belize is under a general crime warning from the U.S. due to incidents involving gangs and other elements in Belize City and elsewhere on the mainland.
