By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Ground-breaking ceremonies were held on Friday in Caye Caulker for a $1.4 million new health clinic.

“I am pleased to tell my people of Caye Caulker that this ground-breaking is the start of a fulfillment of promise … action being taken on the construction of the first phase of the Caye Caulker Health Centre,” said Minister of Blue Economy and area representative for Belize Rural South, Abner Andre Perez.

Perez was accompanied by Prime Minister John Briceño and Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat at the ground-breaking ceremony.

“You, our people will no longer have to fear that being ill means a long travel to the City or San Pedro just to receive critical medical care,” Minister Perez added

“Caye Caulker Residents, you have asked and have been deserving of an improved health center for quite some time,” said a post by PUP Belize Rural south on Facebook.

The ground floor of the health centre will be constructed through financing from the Belize Social Investment Fund (BSIF) at a value of $1.4 million by contractor Julio Magaña of Triple E Construction said a press release posted by PUP Belize Rural South on Facebook. Construction is expected to last nine months.

“The first phase of the construction of the entire ground floor will be equipped with the amenities of a pharmacy, triage room, asthma bay, treatment room, consultation rooms, observation rooms, sterile room, and waste disposal and storage facilities,” said the release.

The release added that phases to “be funded in a future initiative” will include a “second floor and ancillary items, that will include site fencing, reinforced concrete parking stalls, reinforced concrete helipad, etc.”
