Commissioner of Police vows “enabling environment for victims of abuse to report”

By Aaron Humes: In mourning the death of Police Constable Arilee Young murdered at the hands of her partner Glenford Perriott along with daughter Shania Hyde early Saturday, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has called for the community at large to take it into their hands to stop domestic violence and abuse.

On social media, Williams said that “a sad day for our Police Department… will always remind us of the reality that as police officers many of us are going through domestic situations and are afraid to speak out.”

The responsibility is on each and every one of us to end this kind of abuse, Williams said: “As a people, there is a need for us to do more to stem our communities of the scourge of domestic violence and abuse. We can no longer sit and see our women and children dying or being hurt at the hands of those who are supposed to love and protect them.”

It may be easy to point fingers, he continued, but far easier to make the call if your family member, a friend, or your neighbor is being abused: “…you never know, that call might be your family member, friend, or neighbor only hope of getting help. Domestic violence is real but we can all make a difference but reporting every incident.”

The Commissioner also extended his condolences to the families of the victims.
